One of the UK's most experienced construction writers

Michael Willoughby has been writing about building for eight years, making him one of the UK's top freelancers in the profession with a knowledge both broad and deep.

Michael says: "I fell in love with architecture visiting National Trust properties with my parents. Once I started looking up at buildings, I couldn't stop.

My first two successful pitches, to QS News and Architect's Journal came from looking up - at the then new HQ of the Southbank Centre workforce on Hungerford Bridge, wondering about how they kept the noise down. And then at the wonderful, restored ceiling at Wren's St Mary Aldermary.

After I began covering the industry in 2004, I discovered how much of the interest lay in the way buildings were planned, designed and put up. I began to look at all the many different aspects of construction from that point, and I've never looked back.

So far, I have written about:

  • sustainability
  • social housing
  • surveying
  • legislation
  • planning
  • transport
  • energy efficiency
  • architectural theory and criticism
  • pre-fabricated construction
  • BIM and other 3D software
  • PPPs
  • demolition and groundwork
  • lighting
  • interior design

I have written news and features for most of the UK's top construction and architecture magazines, including:

  • Building
  • RIBA Journal
  • Building Design
  • Architect's Journal
  • OnOffice
  • FX
  • idFX
  • Alto
  • Contract Journal
  • Modus
  • Design Insider
  • Contract Manager
  • Construction Journal

Among my construction, design and architecture clients have been:

  • Willmott Dixon
  • Fairhurst Ward Abbot
  • British Contract Furnishing Association
  • AECOM
  • Saint Gobain
  • Kyson architecture
  • In House Communications
  • Arup
  • Laing O'Rourke
  • Screwfix
  • Travis Perkins
  • NHBC
  • Nord-Lock
  • Federation of Master Builders
  • JLL
  • Ballymore
  • Acoustic Products
  • Axis
  • LVO Systems
  • UV Architects
  • Tamdown
  • National Energy Services
  •

Wherever I go as a copywriter, journalist or creative writer, I will always return to and regard construction, design and architecture journalism as my first home. And I still look up at buildings every day."
